Why we need more plants around us.

Everyone who knows me well enough knows that I have become this little plant mom. Yes, may be its a part of growing up, because beautiful ceramic planters nowadays excite me the most! This development has surely happened over the last 4 years, but it's been the most exciting. I have built myself a little forest in my balcony, and now it's started to make it's way inside the house, and it's never felt better. You know when you go on those little getaways and your tiny villa is surrounded by tress and the sound of birds, and you wake up to this, it feels so good and refreshing right? Well, I will be honest, the joy is not as much, but you're still half way there, and that's pretty damn amazing for a workday at home. You wake up to the smell of a little greenery, and feeling refreshed before you have actually done anything.

I'm listing down a few reasons for why we need to do this more. This is coming from a personal space, and luckily also backed by science. (So yayie)

1. They instantly jazz up a space.

Plants have this superpower to  brighten up any space. Not only do indoor plants add color and liveliness to your space, but they also change physical aspects of the environment in pleasant ways. A dull corner in your house, your window, a work desk and even your bedrooms. Not just with plants, but you also have the option of picking some gorgeous planters. Owning plants doesn't have to be expensive. You can start by getting cuttings from your friends, or start by investing slowly, and propagate, so you'll have new plant babies.   An easy and fuss free example is to start with the money plant, they grow well in soil and water. If you're lazy and want to see if you can actually do this, just get a tiny cutting from a friend and keep it in a glass of water, you'll soon see them get new leaves and grow roots. Change the water every now and then and you're good to go.

2.  They boost your mental well being.

Houseplants can do wonders to boost our mental health. Several studies and research have been conducted to prove the same. Researchers in the United Kingdom found that people who live around nature feel much happier than those that don't. Plants have a sense of peace around them. They do not care for your busy day. They are docile, they just sit there and grow. They help you breathe better, they help you stay calm and thus also help you be more productive. Scents also help with the mental health. When you get a good smell, you instantly feel more relaxed and happier. Having flowering plants, or some eucalyptus branches at home would help.

3.  You'll feel a sense of accomplishment.

As humans, we always want to feel needed. Taking care of something, helping something grow feels wonderful. Having this relationship with plants is probably the most fuss free one I can imagine. I mean, it doesn't talk back, or spit in your face or bite you for that matter. Taking care of something and watching it grow is beautiful. You feel oddly responsible and nice.

4. They silently heal you.

Researchers at Kansas State University found that patients with plants in their rooms required less pain medication, had a lower blood pressure and heart rate, and felt less anxiety and fatigue when recovering from surgery than patients without greenery in their rooms. Isn't that fantastic? It makes sense no, if the sight of plants can make us feel relaxed and happy and helps reduce stress, it will definitely help with any sort of recovery too!

Here's hoping to see more plant parents.
